A busy week for Airbus officials continued Wednesday with outreach at a Mobile high school.
Tuesday, the company re-branded Bombardier planes to be built at a new assembly line in Mobile as A220’s.
Then, Airbus announced Jet Blue signed a committment to buy 60 of those jets, again expected to be built in Mobile.
Wednesday, quality assurance officials from Airbus joined mentors from other aerospace companies in the Mobile area help a group of students build their own airplane.
More than a dozen students from the B.C Rain Aviation and Aerospace Academy are giving up some of their free time this summer to build a real airplane they’ll actually have a chance to fly in.
The students began work Tuesday on a year long project building an RV-12, a two seater, built from an assembly kit.
Larry Mouton, the Assistant Superintendent for Workforce Development with the Mobile County Public School System, said, “Between now and May 31st, we’re going to have an aircraft completed and we’re going to be flying out of Brookley Field and taking people on rides.”
Kevin Williams from Airbus is joining other aerospace mentors.
Williams said, “We’re teaching life skills, and technical trade skills that the students can learn and use in the future once they graduate high school, so these are skills that they’ll use at MAE (VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering) or Airbus.”
Students we talked to see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
William Blake, a senior, said, “I plan on being an engineer and I actually plan on going to the military for engineering, so, if I get the opportunity to help better my future career, I’m going to do it.”
Another senior, Titeana Cook, said, “Even though it’s the summer and I’d rather be in my room laying down, it’s interesting being that I want to be a mechanical engineer, I get a hands on touch, and actually gain the experience.”
Joining Airbus helping students with the project are mentors from ST Engineering, Signature Air, and Carlisle IT.
