Minty connects illustrators with publishers, designers and ArtDirectors
Please introduce yourself and your startup Minty to our readers!
Hi, we are Andrej and Petra, founders of Minty, platform to find and hire illustrators.
How did you get the idea to Minty?
Its a long story. Back in 2010, we worked in London as art directors. One thing you notice, when you work in creative segment, is the constant lack of new, authentic visual content. Petra worked in publishing, so she felt the “heat” of searching for visual artists on daily basis.
At first, we put together curated community of some great illustrators, we knew in London, and Slovakia, because we are originally from there. Somehow, our curation was good, and appealing.
After a year, we grew from 30 artists to 300, with new illustrators submissions everyday.
We knew that such fast growing community needs better tools than telephone and emails, so we build Minty. It essentially does everything for you, just like classical artist agent, from help with matchmaking, through price estimation and process, to license management. The only difference is, that its fast (Minty does license estimates in a seconds), and more open. At the moment we have over 3500 vetted illustrators on board.
How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
Growing and nurturing community is always hard, especially when the members are artists, people used to the fact that their individualism makes their brand.
We are continuously upgrading the UX for instance. At the beginning it was pure catastrophe, now its getting better. I mean, it is very good already, but if your platform is used by design savvy professionals, it has to be on entire different level of “very good”. We are working on it.
Who is your target audience?
Its the designers. Either in publishing houses working as art directors, or in digital agencies, or in marketing and design departments of bigger corporations.
Everyone who can appreciate good content and knows it is hard to find, should check out Minty.
What is the USP of your startup?
We are world’s only platform matchmaking visual freelancers that offers whole package. From discovery, through collaboration to image rights management. Btw, no other digital platform does image rights management.
Can you describe a typical workday of you?
I wake up and check email, even in bed. Than do a bit of stretching and yoga, it helps with new ideas and stretches joints. If something good comes on my mind, I tend to put that down, before breakfast. This results often to not having breakfast, but if there is a time, I go for a big brunch like portion, with regular dose of news reading.
Our office is about 5 minutes by walk, so by 10.30 I make it there. Than whole day continues with meeting interruptions, and late, very light lunch.
I am evening person, so also everything in our office is a bit shifted, for instance my day ends in the office often quite late, at about 9.00 pm. If I make it before 8pm, swimming in chilled pool helps to unwind a day. Afterwards we cook dinner at home, read tons of papers (usually on iPad, but I try to migrate back to paper) or just watch Netflix, usually till 1 am. Than sleep, and whole cycle repeats.
Where do you see yourself and your startup Minty in five years?
Hopefully, Minty will be one of the top 3 global platforms to hire visual freelancers.
What 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?
Think it through. Really. Not just number wise, strategic wise or anything-wise. Think your idea through from holistic point of view.
Than, find a good people to work on your project. People are everything.
