MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High School opened its 2018 boys tennis season here Friday with a 4-1 triumph over Pendleton.
Deazen Zerba and Ian Miller posted singles victories for the Pioneers. Zerba defeated Pendleton’s Silas Johnston, 6-3, 6-1, and Miller outlasted the Buckaroos’ Stanton Shmitz, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7).
Mac-Hi swept a pair of doubles contests. Dylan Quist and Alexis Perez beat Noah Butler and Elton Harrison, 7-5, 6-3, while Rolando Castillo and Rafael Perayda teamed up to upend Grady Phelan and Dean Shiller, 6-1, 6-1.
“I enjoy opening the season against Pendleton every year,” Mac-Hi coach Danny Sanchez said. “It helps the players get their first match and nerves out of the way before starting league play.
“I was very pleased,” Sanchez said. “There were two close maches that could have gone either way, but it was a good early test for our players.”
Mac-Hi hosts Riverside for its league opener on Tuesday.
