iOS 12 itself is a significant update to Apple’s mobile operating system. One of its chief features is a top-to-bottom overhaul of the OS that will allow it to run much faster and more efficiently on all devices — particularly older iPhones and iPads.

It also adds a massive upgrade to the native Maps application, which will launch in California when the final version is released before being rolled out in additional locations across the U.S.

The update also upgrades Siri with a new “Shortcuts” capability and contextual reminders, adds multi-user augmented reality, experiences with ARKit 2, and allows Group Notifications for the first time in iOS’s history.

There are also new customizable Memoji characters, new Animoji, group FaceTime support for up to 32 users, and a suite of “digital health” tools that include Screen Time and updated Do Not Disturb options, among many other features.

iOS 12 will be released to the public in the fall as a free over-the-air update. In the meantime, the software is being tested by registered developers and those who are part of Apple’s public beta testing program.
