The Houston Police Department Homicide Division is investigating the death of former Rice football player Blain Padgett.

Authorities found Padgett, 21, dead inside his Houston apartment on March 2 after teammates noticed he’d missed a morning workout. Padgett is a graduate of Hardin-Jefferson ISD.

ROOT CAUSE: Texas, 5 other states accuse opioid maker of fueling overdoeses

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled Padgett’s death an accident, due to effects of carfentanil, a synthetic opioid, according to the Beaumont Enterprise.

Carfentanil is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Houston police wouldn’t confirm whether homicide investigators were treating the death as a homicide, but said that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
