Amazon isn’t the only tech giant that’s looking to increase its New York City presence. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Google was set to purchase the Chelsea Market building and expand the amount of space it plans on leasing at Pier 57. Now, the dominating search engine company is reportedly nearing a deal that could make space for even more employees.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google is negotiating a deal to either buy or lease at the forthcoming 1.3 million-square-foot building at St. John’s Terminal in the West Village. Oxford Properties Group is in the process of redeveloping the building into a massive COOKFOX Architects-designed office complex that will stand more than 12 stories tall and will hopefully open by 2022,

The deal would allow Google to house more than 8,500 staff members and would easily double the company’s current number of staffing in the city, which is currently around 7,000. Additionally, with the Pier 57 expansion, Google’s employee roster in NYC could grow to as many as 20,000, giving Amazon’s HQ2 Long Island City location (should it happen) and its 25,000 jobs a run for its money.

When contacted by WSJ, a spokesperson for Google declined to comment on the reported deal, as did the owner of St. John’s Terminal but a deal this big can’t remain a secret for too long. We’ll you you posted as more details become available.
