Facebook is encouraging 13-year-old girls to befriend middle-aged men, a Telegraph investigation has found, as the NSPCC has called for friend recommendations to be suspended for children.

Teenagers who sign up for the social network are being bombarded with up to 300 friend ‘suggestions’.

Some of the suggestions seen by the Telegraph for accounts registered as 13-year-old girls were for adult men, some of whom were topless in their profile photos.

Facebook has said that was not a typical experience teenagers for signing up for the service and that it has safeguards built into its recommendation system.
