Apple says the are adding about 70 new emojis for iphone, ipad, mac and apple watch users. Buzz60’s Natasha Abellard has the story.
Oh, the humanity!
Apple had the gall to cook up a new bagel emoji as part of an iOS 12 update the other day and leave out the cream cheese.
That’s not something the folks behind the Philadelphia Cream Cheese brand can stomach – and they’re spreading their outrage.
On Twitter, Philadelphia posted: “We think that a #BagelEmoji without cream cheese is a #SadBagel, what do you think? #ItMustBeThePhilly.”
It may not be the most scientific of polls, but 82 percent of the nearly 12,000 people who, um, weighed in on Twitter, voted in favor of cream cheese.
Philadelphia also posted a petition at Change.org on the topic, stating in part, “Apple and Unicode Consortium (a standards body) announced that they will be launching a bagel emoji. As bagel lovers, we rejoiced at this addition – until we realized we’ve been cheated.”
Philadelphia urged 30,000 cream cheese lovers to sign; only 65 had by around 2 P.M. Eastern Time on Friday.
“A bagel needs its cream cheese – it isn’t a bagel without it,” insist Ariel Suffern, head of marketing at Philadelphia Brand. “The two have been inseparable for more than 100 years. As America’s favorite cream cheese, we knew people were passionate about this combination. But after the emoji was released, we saw an immediate uproar on social media of leaving cream cheese off the bagel. We knew we had to take action.”
For its part, Apple hasn’t yet responded to a USA TODAY request for comment.
But in the interest of full disclosure: this journalist loves bagels – and loathes cream cheese.
