There will be plenty of activities for area youth to take part in at the Allerton Public Library this summer, particularly in June. At least one event is planned each weekday next month at the Monticello-based library.

“We have a ton of stuff this summer. It’ll be fun,” Youth and Programming Services Director Cara Stoerger reported to the library board on May 2.

Besides the summer reading program, there will be Explorer’s Science Club programs on Mondays in June; and Tuesday and Wednesday events through July 18 that will include Clothespin Puppets, a Pirate’s Treasure Hunt, and a program by the Orpheum Museum.

A summer reading wrap-up is scheduled for July 24 with a visit from the Monticello High School band and an ice cream social.

A 4H Food Challenge for those in grades six through 12 is being also held at 10 a.m. each Friday in June.

“They discuss nutrition and different ways to prepare things and there are prizes that go with it. It’s kind of like the (TV) show ‘Chopped.’ That’s what they base it on,” said Stoerger.

On June 29 the teams of two to four people will face their last challenge and give presentations to a panel of judges about their creations and nutritional values. All participants will receive a 4-H Food Challenge apron to keep, and the winning teams receive additional prizes.

Additional information, including registration for the reading program and some of the summer events, is available online at www.monticellolibrary.org.
