A few hundred dollars was stolen in the robbery.

BROCKTON — An employee of an auto body shop arrived to work Wednesday and received an unwelcome surprise — he was tied up and the shop was robbed, police said.

Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at Robert’s Auto Body, at 954 Centre St., about 9:20 a.m.

When police arrived, they were told that two suspects had already fled, possibly in a gray SUV.

One of the employees, a 41-year-old man, told police he arrived at the shop and found two men already inside, one of whom was armed with a gun. The shop is scheduled to open each weekday at 9 a.m.

“The employee says the men tied his hands with zip ties,” said police spokesman Darren Duarte. “The auto body worker says the assailants kept him in a hallway while they ransacked the place.”

Around opening time, another employee arrived with his young child, who is less than a year old. The robbers had referred to the second employee by name and told him they knew he was going to jail on a drug charge.

At that time, another person approached the business and the robbers told the second employee to get the man to leave. But the employee picked up his child and left with the man that was outside, prompting the suspects to flee.

“A few hundred dollars was reported stolen,” Duarte said.

The victim told police one of the men was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and the other had a mask with dark glasses.

The Enterprise attempted to speak to employees of the business on Wednesday, but the front door was slammed shut on a reporter and photographer.

“Police are checking the area for surveillance video and the case remains under investigation,” Duarte said.

No arrests had been made as of early Wednesday evening.
