New York City is slamming the brakes on app-based ride services. The city council voted to halt any new licenses for a year, while their contribution to congestion is studied. Uber and Lyft say they reach underserved areas and prices will go up for everyone. According to Cheddar, major cities across the country will keep tabs on the debate, as they deal with similar issues.

The pioneer mattress-in-a-box company Casper has some major expansion plans. The company says it will open 200 stores in the next three years. Casper says the brick-and-mortar stores will help the brand standout in an industry that is becoming increasingly competitive.

School supplies are going high tech. Among the hottest items this year is the Rocketbook Wave notebook. It looks like a normal notebook, but when pages are full you can use an app to send the contents to the cloud. Specialized pens then allow you to erase everything and reuse the pages.
