Smartphones are everywhere. Given the competition in the mobile industry, almost everyone in the world owns or at least knows about them. One area where modern day smartphones have evolved is with regards to the camera quality and performance. Gone are the days when mobile camera would capture grainy photos and videos. Today, there are phones that can capture videos in 4K while imagery is also somewhat on par with professional cameras. The recent trend, however, is the selfie camera. Manufacturers use significantly bolstered hardware for front facing cameras which allow customers to take amazing photos of themselves and their friends.

Keeping the selfie camera in mind, there are some smartphones out there that come with the best front camera on board. Although there are plenty in the industry, we’re going to talk about five of the top phones with a great selfie camera on board.

5 Best Selfie Phones

Apple iPhone X

This phone frankly needs no introduction as it has been on the forefront of news coverage ever since it was launched last year. The arrival of the iPhone X also gave birth to the “notch” design, which several manufacturers are implementing now.

Features like Face ID use a combination of the front camera and an array of other sensors underneath to work. Similarly, the front camera here, which is a 7-megapixel f/2.2 sensor, is capable of quite a few great things. Portrait Selfie, in particular is one of my favorite features as it allows you to take selfies in Portrait Mode, while it was previously limited to the rear cameras.

The iPhone X has a ton of great features, including the buttonless user interface which uses a combination of gestures to work. The iPhone X will cost you $915 on Amazon.

Google Pixel 2

Google’s Pixel 2 is highly rated for having some of the best hardware – software combo out there. Running the latest and greatest version of Android, the Pixel 2 is everything that Google wants Android to be. It comes with a great feature set and an impressive camera, with features like Portrait Mode on the front facing camera. While the feature wasn’t available by default on the Pixel 2, an update to the camera app enabled this feature.

Accessing this feature is pretty easy and can be done within the main camera app, you simply have to tap the Portrait button when you’re on the front facing camera and let the app do the rest. It doesn’t work as seamlessly as on the rear camera, but it’s still pretty decent.

The Pixel 2 is packing a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, the octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of non-expandable storage, and Android 8.0 Oreo with an upgrade to Android 9.0 Pie on the horizon. You can get this particular variant from Amazon for $759. The handset is available in Black, Blue, and White colors.

OnePlus 6

A powerhouse in its own right, the OnePlus 6 is an immensely popular offering with features to rival the best in the business. It comes with a 16-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera which is suitable for wide angle selfies. On the back, the OnePlus 6 comes with a dual-camera arrangement, consisting of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensors respectively. The device comes with a 6.28-inch Optic-AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2280. There’s an octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC, accompanied by 64GB of non-expandable storage, and 6GB of RAM.

The OnePlus 6 runs Android 8.1 Oreo by default, and should most likely get the next major Android version. However, since OnePlus uses its own skin on top of stock Android, the Android 9.0 update is likely to available slightly after the Pixel phones get it. As far as camera features are concerned, the OnePlus 6 is pretty much up there with the big guys. You can get the OnePlus 6 on Amazon for $587.45. Given the pricing of the other phones on this list, we believe the OnePlus 6 is an excellent selfie phone for the price. Be sure to check it out on Amazon.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 9 comes with a significantly revamped selfie camera. This 2018 Samsung flagship comes with an 8-megapixel f/1.7 camera on the front. Now we know what you’re thinking. What chances does Samsung have with an 8-megapixel sensor when the likes of OnePlus offer a significantly higher megapixel count. Well, that’s not quite how camera technology works. It’s the software and hardware combination that makes a great camera. We can safely say that the Galaxy S9 has an amazing front facing camera, which is capable of dual-video calls, using both the front and back cameras simultaneously.

There are a few other features that make it the best Android flagship available today. Samsung mentions that the phone has the biggest battery ever on a Note device, so all those features shouldn’t bear down on the phone’s battery capacity. It also has the biggest display of any Galaxy smartphone at 6.4-inches. This, combined with features like the octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage, make for a truly amazing smartphone. The smartphone is available in Lavender Purple and Ocean Blue on Amazon for $999.99, making it one of the most expensive Samsung phones ever.

LG G7 ThinQ

The G7 is LG’s answer to the heavyweights like the iPhone X and the Pixel 2. It comes with a 6.1-inch 1440 x 3120 display, 64GB of expandable storage, 4GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 845 octa-core SoC, and an 8-megapixel f/1.9 camera on the front. The G7 runs Android 8.0 Oreo, but is promised an update to Android 9.0 Pie in a few months.

The front camera is capable of recording 1080p video at 60fps. This, of course, also means there are several software tricks up the G7’s sleeve to impress the customers. The phone was launched in mid-2018, and with newer smartphones launching soon, the G7 has pretty much taken a backseat on our minds. But given the camera credentials it comes with, it’s not easy to ignore the G7’s utility as a selfie phone. The unlocked LG G7 ThinQ in Platinum Gray can be purchased for $724.40 on Amazon.
